C ontrolling costs is a top priority for most orga- nizations, making lump-sum and managed-cap programs an increasingly viable alternative to unlimited relocation packages. Lump-sum programs, which have become especially popular in recent years, consist of giving employees a specific amount of money upfront to cover—or help cover— the costs of their moves. Employees then typically manage the move themselves, although some companies provide assistance through a third-party relocation provider. In some instances, lump sums are offered only to certain employees (experienced new hires vs. inexperienced new hires, for instance) and/or for certain service categories such as tem - porary housing. In other cases, however, they are utilized for most, if not all, transferring employees, with amounts that may vary by employee level, percentage of salary, etc.
