ontrolling costs is a top priority for most orga-
nizations, making lump-sum and managed-cap
programs an increasingly viable alternative to
unlimited relocation packages.
Lump-sum programs, which have become especially
popular in recent years, consist of giving employees a
specific amount of money upfront to cover—or help cover—
the costs of their moves. Employees then typically manage
the move themselves, although some companies provide
assistance through a third-party relocation provider. In some
instances, lump sums are offered only to certain employees
(experienced new hires vs. inexperienced new hires, for
instance) and/or for certain service categories such as tem
porary housing. In other cases, however, they are utilized for
most, if not all, transferring employees, with amounts that
may vary by employee level, percentage of salary, etc.
