34 Mobility | February 2017 PATHWAYS: HOW I FELL INTO MOBILITY My "mobility story" began in 2013, when I was recruited to explore a career in mobility. Marilyn Martin, SCRP, who has had a long career in relocation, was in the process of identifying a successor to lead the relocation department for our brokerage, Coldwell Banker Prime Properties. At the time, I was working in business development in a commercial division of a sister company. Marilyn met with me, and we talked at length about the mobility industry, the position of vice president of relocation and business development, and what would lie ahead with this career choice. As part of my decision-making process, I attended the 2013 Worldwide ERC ® National Relocation Conference in San Diego. After experiencing the indus- try firsthand, I returned home with an affirmative "yes" that I would accept this exciting opportunity! Over the course of the next two years, Marilyn and I worked through what we often referred to as our "relocation road map." The road map was our succes - sion plan, and it outlined key points for knowledge transfer and milestones that were to be met along the way. With the full support of our company owners, Jim Long and Ken Raymond, Marilyn and I would complete our road map on schedule in May 2015, when I received my CRP ® designation. In addition to learning the specifics of the day-to- day operation of the department, I knew that it was important to develop a strong understanding of the larger mobility space. From the history of relocation to the various stakeholders that make our industry tick, this knowledge was essential in understand - ing the importance of our team's daily work. While moving through our road map, I often turned to Worldwide ERC ® and pulled from resources includ- ing Mobility articles, conference sessions, and online courses such as Relocation 101 SM : U.S. Workforce Mobility Essentials. YP40 also played an integral role in my develop- ment and introduction to the industry. It helped build my understanding and relationships with Worldwide ERC ® staff and members, many of whom I am happy to now call friends. Each opportunity to learn some- thing new about the industry was another step closer to our successful transition.
